Medicine & Miracles: Serving Refugees at the Border
As a family medicine physician, I’ve viewed medicine as a calling—not a career. But it wasn’t until I volunteered for medical missions, that I fully understood what it meant to “live out” the Gospel with a stethoscope.
I joined a Christian medial mission team serving refugees along the U.S.-Mexico border- families fleeing poverty from across Central America. What they found was uncertainty, overcrowded shelters, and limited access to even the most basic medical care.

We set up our clinic inside a dormitory in a large encampment on the outskirts of Tijuana, Mexico. We saw dozens of patients, mostly with respiratory illnesses. It was medicine stripped down to its rawest form - just a few tables, some donated supplies, and a team fueled by prayer. What made this experience different wasn’t just the need- it was the opportunity to serve in Jesus’ name. Every time I listened to a heartbeat, I was reminded of Matthew 25:40 - “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”. We were loving our neighbors.
If you are a medical professional and you feel the nudge to go-then go. Your skills are needed, your heart is needed, and most of all, “Christ in you” is needed. You may discover that healing doesn’t always come through medicine alone. Sometimes, healing looks like listening. Like praying. Like showing up. And sometimes, it is as simple as letting someone know they are seen, loved, and not forgotten by God.
