"We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:8)
His Final Days: Chief Mulenga's Journey to Eternal Life
Reaching The Hungry's September 2023 Mission Trip to Lilongwe unveiled a remarkable story that illustrates the transformative power of Christ. At the center of this story is Senior Group Village Headman Mulenga, a 92-year-old leader from a rural village in Malawi. As a respected custodian of his community's cultural heritage, Chief Mulenga had long adhered to the traditions of his ancestors. However, on the day of our team's visit, a new chapter began for both him and his village.
We installed a water well in Chief Mulenga's village to provide access to clean water—a vital resource often scarce in Malawi's rural areas. Later that evening, as we shared the Jesus Film and preached the Gospel, something extraordinary happened. As a witness to the power of Christ's love, Chief Mulenga experienced a profound change. Just hours after receiving this essential gift of clean water, he received an even more precious gift: the gift of salvation. Deeply moved, tears of joy filled his eyes as he felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. By the grace of God, he was transformed and soon began attending a local church, where he worshiped the one true God. As a village chief, his newfound faith not only changed his life but also had a ripple effect throughout his community, igniting a spiritual revival and leading many to believe in Christ.
Chief Mulenga passed into eternity this year and is now with our Lord Jesus Christ. His Christian burial served as a major witness to his village and many other chiefs of nearby villages, demonstrating the profound impact of his belief in Christ. We are humbled that our mission trip played a pivotal role in his journey, bringing lasting change and eternal hope in Christ to the residents of Chief Mulenga's village.
